Well, hello there! I’m Susan Olsen the writer/creator here at Dream. Fight. Conquer.
Let’s start by giving you some background knowledge about who I am, and then I will explain the reason why I decided to create this blog.
(NOTE: Keep in mind, I am answering these questions very broadly to give a general idea. Some key points are being intentionally left out as I plan to cover them more thoroughly in my blog posts.)
Where am I from?
I grew up in a suburban town just outside of Detroit, MI called Hazel Park. My parents divorced when I was just five years old. I spent most of my formative years living with my mother, a heroin addict. As one can expect it was anything but a stable environment. I bounced around a lot, from my dad’s house to my grandparent’s house, to my mom’s aunt’s house in a cockroach-infested trailer park. The possibilities were endless and we never settled in to one place for too long.
Needless to say, it would be no surprise when I found out I was pregnant at 17 (statistically speaking). In an effort to find a stable home for me and my soon-to-be child, I asked my father if I could live with him in northern Michigan. He and his family had moved north to Manton Michigan a few years earlier after they lost their home to a tragic fire. He agreed and came to pick me up on December 26th 2004.
I lived in Manton for a few years, which was an extremely difficult transition for me. I eventually ended up settling down in Traverse City, Michigan, where I live today.
